In the World Bank, the issue of sustainable development is housed in the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (ESSD) network. But in order to make development sustainable, every aspect of World Bank operations are applicable. To the right are links to those groups who are involved in the process of ensuring that the World Bank's development work is sustainable, including:
- Efficient and clean energy supply is central to the reduction of poverty through many and varied linkages, as well as being important for economic growth. Yet many developing and transition economies suffer from poor energy services. These countries must overcome major challenges in improving the performance – social, economic, financial, insistutional, and environmental – of their energy suppliers.
- Infrastructure has multiple links to poverty reduction. Improved infrastructure can help create jobs and raise worker productivity. It can save time and human effort in transporting water, crops, wood, and other commodities. It can also improve health (by reducing indoor air pollution and emissions in urban areas and making clean water available) and education (by expanding access to schools, computers, and lighting).
- The mission of the transport group in the Bank is to assist clients to reduce poverty by improving the efficiency and equity of transport policy and interventions. It works with the public and private sector and communities to enhance the capacity of transport institutions to provide sustainable infrastructure and services.
- Private sector development is about tapping private initiative for socially useful purposes. It is a way of doing things across sectors. Private initiative, especially when unleashed in competitive markets, has tremendous potential to contribute to growth and poverty reduction, in parallel with public sector efforts. This has been the experience in developed countries and is now increasingly evident in the developing world.
- The mission of the Health, Nutrition, and Population group is to assist clients to improve health, nutrition, and population outcomes of poor people and protect people from the impoverishing effects of illness, malnutrition, and high fertility.
- The World Bank Institute's Sustainable Development Program delivers learning programs on issues central to poverty reduction and sustainable development, builds broad-based constituencies and partnerships for sustainable change, and promotes knowledge networks.
- Students and teachers will find many useful resources related to sustainable development in the Kids & Schools website. These resources include documents & data for research, learning modules for the classroom, and links to related websites.
