The World Bank's Response/Role

To fulfill the above objectives, the Indigenous Peoples and Cultural Diversity Thematic Team assists the Social Development Family to:
  1. Create an effective framework, and language to translate and communicate such concepts as cultural diversity, cultural heritage and social inclusion to other Bank staff and our Borrowers. For and overview of this conceptual framework, go to:
  2. Demonstrate the utility and value of these concepts in designing development interventions for specific regions, countries and localities.
  3. Improve the implementation of OD 4.20 (Indigenous Peoples) and strengthen the protection of cultural heritage through the Quality Assurance (QA) process and other development interventions.
  4. Build into the country dialogue and sector work a discussion of issues relating to indigenous peoples and cultural diversity.
  5. Foster partnerships with national research institutes and international agencies concerned with indigenous peoples and cultural diversity.
  6. Develop training and research programs to increase Bank staff and Borrower understanding of the importance of indigenous peoples and cultural diversity in poverty reduction programs and the national building and sustainable development process.
