A Partnership for Development
Indigenous Peoples, although relatively few in number, are a significant and important portion of humanity. Their heritage, their ways of life, their stewardship of this planet, and their cosmological insights are an invaluable treasure house for us all.
The World Bank is honored to be working worldwide with Indigenous Peoples in global dialog and in development projects. The World Bank aims to promote Indigenous Peoples’ development in a manner which ensures that the development process fosters full respect for the dignity, human rights, and uniqueness of Indigenous Peoples.
What’s Current
Revised Draft Operational Policy on Indigenous Peoples (Revised Draft OP 4.10)
The World Bank has been engaged in global consultations regarding the revision of its Indigenous Peoples Policy OD 4.20 and its conversion to the new Operational Policies/Bank Procedures 4.10 format.
On November 29, 2004, the Committee on Development Effectiveness of the World Bank’s Board endorsed the posting of the Revised Draft Operational Policy on Indigenous Peoples (Revised Draft OP 4.10) for public comment. The Revised Draft Operational Policy on Indigenous Peoples (Revised Draft OP 4.10) has been developed over the last six years, taking into account inputs from numerous consultations with external stakeholders, including Indigenous Peoples leaders, Civil Society Organizations and borrower governments.
The period of public comment on the Revised Draft Policy concluded on February 28, 2005. The Revised Draft Policy, together with a report summarizing the comments, will be forwarded to the Bank’s Board of Executive Directors for consideration of its policy content, including the title of the policy. Once approved by the Board, Operational Policy 4.10 will replace the existing Operational Directive 4.20 on Indigenous Peoples.
