The World Bank: A Commitment to Environmentally and Socially Responsible Growth

Growth is essential to reducing poverty and to reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. But growth at any cost is not sustainable. Responsible growth -- growth that embraces both environmental sustainability and social development -- is needed to maintain the increases in human welfare in consumption, in health, in human skills, in social equity, that are targets of the MDGs.
