Project Databases

As of July 2003, GEF Council or CEO has approved over 350 projects implemented by the World Bank Group with a total GEF co-financing amount of over $ 2.42 billion. A majority of these projects (193) are in Biodiversity focal area with total GEF co-financing of $906 million. A total of 98 projects have been approved in the Climate Change focal area with a GEF co-financing of $983 million. The remaining projects are in International Waters (29 projects with GEF co-financing of $293 million), the Ozone Depletion (12 projects with GEF co-financing of $126 million) and multi focal area projects.

Of these GEF Council or CEO approved projects, 290 have already been approved by the World Bank Group. One Hundred and Eighty Seven of these are Full-Sized Projects, 73 are Medium-Sized Projects, and the rest are Enabling Activities. The focal area distribution of these projects is as follows:
  • Biodiversity focal area: 169 projects with GEF co-financing of $821 million;
  • Climate Change focal area: 71 projects with GEF co-financing of $585 million;
  • International Waters focal area: 23 projects with GEF co-financing of $203 million;
  • Ozone Depletion and Multi focal area: 27 projects with GEF co-financing of $183 million;
The portfolio of projects under implementation includes projects directly managed by the Bank, as well as those managed by the International Finance Corporation. Executing Agencies for these projects include the regional development bank, governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
