Environment Matters, 2002
__
 | At the end of August 2002, world leaders will gather in Johannesburg for the World Summit on Sustainable Development to face together the dual challenge of shrinking the ranks of the poor and laying the foundations for a sustainable future. |
The 2002 edition of Environment Matters grapples with these issues. It examines the challenges of equitable development, resource use efficiency, and treating natural capital as a key factor in sustainable development. It looks into the critical building blocks for a more sustainable future and some of the important lessons learned since the 1992 Rio conference.
It also summarizes the portfolio of Bank projects and initiatives that are contributing to the implementation of our new Environment Strategy, and demonstrates why the environment really does matter if we are to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
