Projects

In order to better reflect the complexity of its operations, the Bank is moving to a new system of classifying its lending and non-lending activities. Under this new system, each operation can have up to five sector codes and five thematic codes. The selection of the sectors is based on the sectors of the economy that receive the Bank's support. The selection of themes is based on the objectives of the operation. The sectoral and thematic assignments are two dimensions of the same operations.

In the new system, "Environment and Natural Resources Management" is one of eleven thematic groups, and includes the following themes:
  • biodiversity
  • climate change
  • environmental policies and institutions
  • land management
  • pollution management and environmental health
  • water resources management
  • other environment and natural resources management
Preliminary estimates from the new system of classification reveal that the Bank's environment portfolio of projects under supervision amounts to $16.4 billion (as of third quarter, FY02). This portfolio includes IDA and IBRD, GEF Full-Sized, GEF Medium-Sized, Montreal Protocol, Carbon Offsets, Debt Service Facility, Guarantees, Rainforest, and Special Financing projects.

Of the Bank’s environment and natural resources management portfolio, $5.2 billion represents the core portfolio—projects with primary environmental and natural resources management objectives (for these projects, at least 75 percent of the Bank lending is associated with such objectives).

In addition, there is nearly an $11 billion portfolio of environmental and natural resources management components in various sector projects. This broader portfolio includes project components in a range of sectors from agriculture, to energy, transportation, and water supply and sanitation. For example, environmental components in the agricultural sector include environmentally sustainable activities in forestry, watersheds, biodiversity, fisheries, coastal zone management, environmental policies and the like. Components in the energy sector are activities funded to strengthen environmental management capacity in the sector, remove market barriers to renewable and energy efficiency investments, reduce greenhouse gas intensive activities, and reduce pollution emissions.
