Trust Fund Partnerships
For many years, a number of donor countries including Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Finland have supported the environmental activities of the World Bank through Trust Funds, either as Consultant Trust Funds (CTF) or as targeted Environment Trust Funds.
These have allowed the Bank to expand the scope of its environmental activities, and in particular, they have enabled the greater involvement of local officials, local specialists, NGOs, and other stakeholders in identifying, discussing, and addressing their environmental priorities. In this way, the resources provided by the donors have accelerated and expanded the mainstreaming of environment into the Bank's dialogue with its clients.
Recognizing the importance of this support and in line with the increasing emphasis on partnerships in development work, the Bank's Environment Strategy stresses the need to build partnerships with donors around shared strategic objectives for the environment. In line with this approach, key donor Trust Funds for the environment are now being aligned with the objectives of the Environment Strategy and made consistent with the broad Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development mandate, through a dialogue with those donors.
