Environmental Economics and Indicators
It is difficult to know how to manage the pressures and challenges facing environmental protection when we lack good information on which to base decisions. So how do we know whether our strategies for environmental protection are working?
Environmental and Economic performance indicators can help us measure progress and track changes in our environment and the economic consequences over time, as well as inform us about the need for appropriate and timely responses to environmental problems. This is an area in which the World Bank has been working since the mid-1990s. While the development of indicators remains a work in progress, the World Bank has developed a series of indicators to help in more effectively tracking the progress of its environmental activities.
Environmental economics supports the Environment Strategy of the World Bank and assists clients and partners to address environmental problems as an integral part of sustainable development. The work program assists these goals through the development of environmental indicators, examining poverty and environment linkages, environmental valuation, exploring payments for environmental services, and a selection of special projects.
