For the next two decades, the majority of the world's poor will live in rural areas. The Bank is aware that its mission of a world free of poverty will not be realized without effectively combating rural poverty.
A recent review of the World Bank's lending for rural projects showed that:
- In fiscal year (FY)1 2003, lending for projects in rural areas increased by 50% to approximately $7.6 billion, representing 41% of total World Bank lending;
- The International Development Association committed 52% of its total funding ($3.7 billion) to rural areas in FY 2003, amounting to one-half the total investment by the World Bank Group in rural areas;
- Lending to the infrastructure sectors2 increased to 33 percent of lending to rural areas, a jump from 27 percent in FY 2002;
- World Bank commitments in rural areas are well-aligned with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), with most rural lending in FY 2003 targeting the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger ($3.9 billion).
